Art Photo

Art Photography focuses on photography as an art form. This class is workshop format where most of the class time is spent in the field or the lab. Students may respond to assignments digitally or conventionally. Students will learn to communicate visually with photographs in response to specific assignments. Each student will study the fundamentals of camera operation such as metering, selecting appropriate shutter speeds, depth of field, mode selection, indoor and outdoor lighting techniques, specialized lenses, and tripod use.

A great deal of time will be spent learning about composition and the use of symbolism to guide the viewer. Image editing software, Adobe Photoshop CS6 will be utilized in this course.

At the conclusion of each assignment, students evaluate and discuss each other's photographs in a peer-led critique. Evaluation is based on participation in critiques, aesthetic content, and technical aspects of each assignment and a final portfolio of work.

The final examination will consist of the preparation and presentation of a final portfolio. All students will participate in one or more exhibits.

Art Photo Advanced

In addition to a more specific exploration of many of the concepts covered in Art Photography I, advanced students will be encouraged to prepare a body of work that is linked technically and conceptually. Advanced concepts will include: developing advanced conceptual frameworks, studio lighting techniques, conceptual portraiture, composites, sequence, symmetrical abstractions, and matting. The final exam will be the production and presentation of a portfolio.

Graphic Design

In this course, students will be introduced to the Graphic design industry. Students will create thumbnail sketches, rough development drawings, and comprehensive design plans, all of which are the building blocks of the design process. Students will spend time learning the fundamentals of visual communication. This course will stress how the artist can communicate and create meaning through simple yet intentional visual manipulation (points, lines, planes, gestalt, and color). This course will cover the power of words through an examination of typography. Students will learn to use typography as a communication tool— to make artful design choices and organize and communicate meaning. Students will discover how type can be used to make text more readable, and how it can help organize content for ease of comprehension. Students will access the Adobe Creative programs Photoshop, InDesign & Illustrator on their devices. Topics covered will include; visual identity design, marketing & advertising design, publication design, packaging design, environmental graphic design, and art and illustration for graphic design.
